ART + SCIENCE
My expertise is in encaustic painting. I have knowledge in the use of several waxes: the traditional beeswax, microcrystalline wax and soy wax. The soy wax is an experimental wax that I have been developing with a scientist at Iowa State University.
This unique collaboration regarding soy wax has brought considerable and favorable attention to the intersection between art and science on this university campus. It has been a fantastic opportunity for artist and scientist. On the science side of our university they have provided me with a laboratory to conduct the experimentation of testing various soy “wax” recipes. This project has also provided an opportunity to broaden the discussion and opportunity with, and for, our art and design students. There is the strong potential for the creation of a product from this research. This is an area of studio art that I never imagined prior to working with encaustic as a medium.
This collaboration is ongoing in my lab on Iowa State University campus.
